Well, summer is coming to a close and we are busier than ever at Peach Crest Farms. Not only does the start of fall bring on a flurry of busy bodies getting their ducks in a row to start school, it also has the same effect on the farm. For Peach Crest, the beginning of a new school year means FARM TO SCHOOL – our very favorite time of year! We are growing a variety of organic produce, but we are specifically growing outrageous amounts of cantaloupe, yellow squash, zucchini, cucumbers, bell peppers and grape tomatoes to send to schools all over the state. Now, when I say “outrageous amounts” keep in mind that while we are a modest Oklahoma farm, these are still OUTRAGEOUS amounts of wonderful, nutritious and organic produce!
This picture is of one block of cantaloupe – one block, mind you, is 1 mile of crop. We currently have about 20 acres in cantaloupe production and similar numbers in yellow squash and zucchini. Now that’s a lot of produce! All of it is carefully timed in planting to serve the approximate SIXTY school districts that participate in Farm to School. So, needless to say we are busy, busy, busy here at Peach Crest and wouldn’t have it any other way! We are blessed to have the opportunity to provide children with access to nutritious options for their school lunches and we are reminded of this each day that we harvest, wash, pack and ship off our fabulous produce to hungry kiddos all over Oklahoma.
Here’s one of our lovely employees standing next to the 8,500 pounds of cantaloupe we packed that week!
